In My Element: Interview with Elfy Scott
Introducing our stunning Element Eden face for winter; Elfy Scott!
Elfy tell us a little about your self?
I’m a freelance writer and model based in Sydney and currently losing my mind finishing a degree in psychological sciences.
That is impressive! What made you choose a path of Psychological sciences?
I've always been interested in science – it was a huge part of my family life growing up. When I was eight I was convinced I was going to be an entomologist and demanded a kid's microscope for my 9th birthday. Psychological science was a pretty logical step for me – I always loved philosophy and mental illness was something I had first hand experience with and loved to research. Why wouldn't you be interested in discovering why we think and behave the way we do?!
What Inspires you to be the person you are?
There are a great number of things that motivate me, but the most critical would have to be my curiosity, my love of learning, my passion to create and possibly my fear of impending mortality.
How do you unleash your creativity?
I have a lot of outlets for my creative energy – writing, illustrating, and singing amongst them.
Is there a particular topic or genre of writing you are interested in?
Fiction, non-fiction, anything really. Popular science books about psychology or biology, books about linguistics are always fascinating, epic fictions, silly fiction, classics, whatever!
Do you have a favourtie book you would like to share?
Very, very tough call but Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie or Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides are definitely my favourite works of fiction (Evelyn Waugh, Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut and Bret Easton Ellis are always a good time as well). And as far as non-fiction goes, anything by Steven Pinker, Oliver Sacks or V.S Ramachandran.
What do you love doing on your weekends?
I work most weekends but when I get the opportunity, I love to have a hard night dancing and being incredibly silly with my friends. Although with my chaotically busy schedule at the moment, above anything else, I just appreciate every weekend night I get to spend at home with my boyfriend curled up on the sofa watching Mad Men and eating Turkish food.
Can you tell us about your simple life pleasures?
Eating a lot, reading as much as possible, working out, and a good bloody cup of black English Breakfast tea.
Is there a particular life motto that defines you and your life?
In relation to purpose or career, I can’t say that I have any specific one that I abide by but in personal and moral standards I always try to remind myself of a Kant quote, “Act as though the maxim of your action were by your will to become a universal law of nature.” It makes me a better person every time I consider it.
What made you decide to get into into modelling?
To be honest, I never planned it for myself at all or envisioned any success for myself as a model, purely based on who I am and how I look, I sort of fell into it more than anything else by chance. That being said, every year I love it more and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved so far.
Do you have any other hidden talents?
I absolutely love to sing, it’s one of my greatest passions but I so rarely let people know that side of me. I used to be in a punk band loved performing around Sydney with our terrible shouty music – it’s something that I’m absolutely set on continuing in the future. Oh also, I can fold my tongue in half.
